Following several years of negative growth, the Swiss market revived somewhat in 2004, with newly installed capacity increasing by 40 % over 2003. The positive growth looks set to continue in 2005 – in spite of the Swiss government’s PV budget freeze – in particular thanks to two large-scale projects.

The initial 850 kW of what will eventually become a 1,3 MW system has been commissioned on the roof of the new Stade de Suisse football stadium in Berne. The energy produced will be sold by the utility BKW under its solar stock exchange approach (see PV Power #12). A second 1 MW scale system currently being installed in Geneva will help assure 2005 sees Switzerland’s largest annual installed PV capacity to date.
