During the last week of February 1998, the Electricity Supply Association of Australia (ESAA) held its 4th Renewable Energy Technologies and remote Area Power Supplies Conference in Hobart, Tasmania. IEA  PVPS Task 1 experts held their 12th meeting in conjunction with the conference.

While the mainland cities sweltered in 40 degrees heat, the conference delegates from a dozen countries enjoyed balmy Tasmanian weather and discussed the various current drivers and markets for renewable energy - the theme of this conference.

PV technologies and applications received considerable attention in all sessions, with interests ranging from how to meet the unserved energy need of developing countries to the role of PV in achieving greenhouse gas reductions from the energy markets of developing countries. A workshop was held on the latest Task 1, subtask PV in Competitive Electricity Markets, the result of which will contribute to the outcomes of this project.

Following the conference, workshop and meetings in Hobart some of the Task 1 experts took the opportunity to visit PV organisations and businesses in Sydney, and to tour the Sydney Olympics Solar Village, currently under construction.
