Abstract: These proceedings consist of the invited presentations, reports and concluding overview statements of the executive conference on Strategic Photovoltaic Business Opportunities for Utilities, which was held in Sun Valley, Idaho, USA on 17-20 September 1995. The conference was jointly organized by the International Energy Agency, the United States Department of Energy, the Idaho Power Company and the Edison Electric Institute. Idaho Power Company hosted the conference, which support from the State of Idaho and the Idaho Public Utilities Commission. Over 150 executives from 23 countries participated and contributed their views.
The current business approaches and PV applications in the Pacific Region, Europe and the United States were presented to provide the context for the discussions in which the following major topics were addressed:
  • Strategic photovoltaic business opportunities for utilities
  • Utility competition and restructuring.
  • Policy, regulatory, institutional and customer-related issues.
  • Global market opportunities and implications for large-scale markets for PV power systems.
  • Opportunities for international collaboration.
One of the major outcomes of the Sun Valley conference was the recognition by the participants that the specific market opportunities would best be developed through strategic alliances between the utilities, the PV industry and other appropriate companies. Meeting customer electric service needs was also recognised as fundamental to success in those markets where distributed generation appeared to be the optimal delivery strategy. Infrastructure development was also identified as a key factor to sustainable PV energy service business.
