NEW - Improving Efficiency of PV Systems using Statistical Performance Monitoring by Task 13

This report focusses on new methods for closely monitoring PV systems by using the existing data produced by the system for statistical analysis. This will enable system owners and maintenance personnel to quickly ascertain a fault condition, even before the fault occurs with some methods, thereby increasing PV system availability.

NEW - Technical Assumptions Used in PV Financial Models by Task 13

PV financial models are used by project developers, banks and asset managers to evaluate the profitability of a PV project. The objective of this work is to present an overview of current practices for financial modelling of PV investments and to review them in view of technical and financial risks during the different phases of a PV project.

NEW - Assessment of Photovoltaic Module Failures in the Field by Task 13

In this report we present the current status and predictive ability for the power loss of PV mod-ules for specific failure modes. The team describes PV module material interactions and incom-patibilities among encapsulation materials and lamination processes so as to better understand PV module failures mechanism.

NEW - Snapshot of Global PV Markets 2017 by Task 1

IEA PVPS has distinguished itself throughout the years by producing unbiased reports on the development of PV all over the world, based on information from official government bodies and reliable industry sources. This fifth edition of the Snapshot of Global PV Markets aims at providing preliminary information on how the PV markets developed in the last year. The 22nd edition of the PVPS complete "Trends in PV Applications" report will be published after Q3 2017.

NEW - Do It Locally: Local Voltage Support by Distributed Generation by Task 14

This report presents an overview of research results and field experiences on the subject of local voltage support by distributed generators (DGs). The focus of this report is the German power supply system, which has experienced a significant photovoltaic (PV) expansion of approximately 36 GW within the last decade. Case study results from different countries like Belgium, Austria and the United States complement the findings on local voltage support by PV systems.

NEW - PV Performance Modeling Methods and Practices by Task 13

This report accomplishes two tasks. The first is to provide a technical overview of the steps to modeling the power and energy output from grid connected PV systems. The second is to provide a summary of the results of the first in a series of joint IEA PVPS Task 13 / PVPMC workshops. Approximately 220 solar energy experts from over 30 countries gathered for 2 days to discuss and share results related to predicting the performance and monitoring the output from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

NEW - Network Driven Demand Side Management by Task 14

Change of paradigm in today's grid management practices leads to new opportunities and challenges for active power balance as well as power system management. DSM is identified as a major opportunity and in this report the title “Network Driven Demand Side Management” has been chosen to emphasize a collaborative approach between decentral generation, loads, storage systems and the grid.

The new 2016 Edition of the IEA PVPS report Trends in Photovoltaic Applications is now available. This edition browses 21 years of PV installations in the IEA PVPS member countries and many others. How an energy supply system with a high PV share handled a solar eclipse

 

The solar eclipse from March 2015 raised many concerns amongst grid operators in Europe about the ability of grids to support high ramp-up and ramp-down rates. This new report published by the Task 14 of IEA-PVPS draws conclusions on how the eclipse was managed in Germany.

End-of-Life Management Solar Photovoltaic Panels

 

The report, End-of-Life Management: Solar Photovoltaic Panels, is the first-ever projection of PV panel waste volumes to 2050 and highlights that recycling or repurposing solar PV panels at the end of their roughly 30-year lifetime can unlock a large stock of raw materials and other valuable components.

2015 Snapshot of Global Photovoltaic Markets

IEA-PVPS’s new report indicates that 50 GW of new PV plants have been installed globally in 2015, a 25% increase compared to final 2014 numbers. The “Snapshot of Global Photovoltaic markets” presents the first sound estimate of the PV market in 2015 based on accurate and official data sources.

Review and Analysis of PV Self-consumption Policies

This report aims at providing a comparative analysis of existing mechanisms supporting the self-consumption of electricity in key countries all over the world and to highlight the challenges and opportunities associated to their developments. Mechanisms promoting self-consumption of PV electricity are based on the idea that PV electricity will be used first for local consumption and that all this electricity should not be injected into the grid.

Characterization of Spatio-Temporal Variations and Ramp Rates

In this new study, short term variability in power output due to changing intensity due to cloud cover is assessed for its impact on energy delivery from PV power systems. It explains how PV shouldn't be called "intermittent" anymore but "variable" and suggests a simple global model for modelling variability of PV fleets.

(UPDATED) Energy From the Desert - 2015 Edition - Factsheets

This study closes 15 years of research on very-large scale PV systems. It explores the latest developments including the integration of such systems into the electricity mixes. Africa, China and the concept of the North-Asian supergrid are discussed in the report.

Power system operation and augmentation planning with PV integration

This new study focuses on balancing supply and demand at system level, including some aspect of managing congestion in the transmission grids. The report also reviews the state-of-the-art technology for system operation planning and grid reinforcements. A section discusses case studies of system operation planning.

A Snapshot of Global PV Markets 2014

With 38.7 GW of PV installations in 2014, the global PV market continued to expand, especially in Asia and the Americas, but with a limited growth compared to the past years. With 177 GW of PV installations, 1% of the world PV electricity demand were covered by PV.

Life-Cycle Assessment of Future Residential PV in Europe

This study aims to provide scenario-based information about the environmental performance (LCA) of single-Si and CdTe PV modules produced and operated in the far future (2030 to 2050).

Life Cycle Inventories and Life Cycle Assessments of PV Systems

This report presents a complete study on life cycle inventories and life cycle assessment. it presents the latest consensus LCA results on five technologies for which there are well-established and up-to-date LCI data. The LCA indicators shown herein include Energy Payback Times (EPBT), Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHG), criteria pollutant emissions, and heavy metal emissions.

This report outlines a technical overview towards deployment of PV systems for rural health facilities in developing areas. The demand and supply of energy in health facilities is analysed, and international standards are presented. Technical and economic aspects of different power generation options are discussed.
