6th WCPEC Conference, Kyoto, Japan

In 2014, PV has provided at least 1% of the world electricity demand for the first time. While this percentage represents still a small contribution, PV’s growth is at such a pace that it could become a significant source of electricity and modify radically the way how the world is powered in the coming decade. The IEA-PVPS has been researching the challenges associated with PV development for well over 20 years. This workshop has highlighted the main challenges and promises PV will bear in the coming years and decades. As an official event of the 6th WCPEC, this PVPS Programme Workshop is jointly organised by the IEA - International Energy Agency, the WCPEC-6 and NEDO, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization of Japan.

29th EU-PVSEC in Amsterdam, the Netherlands

  • IEA PVPS in the Industry Area

IEA-PVPS was present inside the exhibition area in during the fair.

  • IEA PVPS in the Conference Area

IEA-PVPS co-organized three workshops:

  • Monday 22 Sept. 2014 - IEA-PVPS Task 1-Task 14 Workshop in collaboration with IEA-SHC, IEA-RETD & EPIA. "Self-Consumption Business-Models: Economic and technical Challenges"

While the cost of PV electricity is going down, the question of how business models based on the self-consumption of PV electricity becomes more acute. This workshop will explore the challenges associated with producing electricity with PV for local needs from a technical and economical point of view. An in-depth analysis of the potential and challenges of self-consumption based business models will be discussed, with a focus on storage and “Demand Side Management” through Solar heating and Cooling. In addition, the need to integrate in the electricity system and especially the question of the integration into the distribution grids will be linked to the question of self-consumption.

  • Tuesday 23 Sept. 2014 - IEA-PVPS Task 13 Workshop. "PV Performance Analysis and Module Reliability"

The new efforts deal particularly with the economics of PV system performance and reliability. The experts will review current practices for financial modelling of PV investments from the perspectives of technical risks during PV module production, PV system operation and the remaining uncertainties over the system’s service life.  Economic and institutional issues such as the comparison of investment costs and cost per kilowatt-hour, the analysis of maintenance costs of specific components as well as the analysis of failures and statistics will also be included in the extended Task 13 work programme.

  • Tuesday 23 Sept. 2014 - IEA-PVPS Task 12 Workshop. "PV Life Cycle Management & Recycling"

With the introduction of regulatory requirements on the end-of-life management of PV panels and installations in the European Union through the recast WEEE Directive and the transposition of this Directive into 27+ different EU Member State Laws, the topic of PV Recycling reached the next level of maturity – evolving from mainly voluntary producer life cycle management initiatives to a mandatory collection and recycling regime in one of the most important PV markets globally. This development will certainly trigger similar developments in other regions of the world – first similar tendencies can be observed in the United States, Japan, Israel and China, where materials life cycle management of PV systems gains higher attention. Next to initiating policy discussions on an international level beyond the EU, the implementation of the WEEE Directive will also trigger the learning curve for PV recycling technologies to move ahead, as volumes become more predictable. The motivation for this workshop is to provide an update on the international technical and regulatory developments and re-engage the scientific community in a dialogue on end-of-life management strategies of PV systems on a global scale.
